As the rave and club scene expanded to metropolitan and suburban areas across the country, MDMA use and distribution increased as well. Today, the drug is still used by a broader group of people who more commonly call it Ecstasy or Molly. MDMA (3-4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic, psychoactive drug with a chemical structure similar to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. Commonly known as ecstasy or “Molly”, MDMA was used in social settings since the 70s and 80s before gaining wider popularity in the 90s as a “club drug”. The gradual increase in its use followed the ban of the similar but more potently psychedelic 3,4-methylenedioxy-amphetamine (MDA) in 1970.
It is an illegal drug that acts as both a stimulant and psychedelic, producing an energizing effect, as well as distortions in time and perception and enhanced enjoyment from tactile experiences. What’s sold as ecstasy often contains drugs other than MDMA, which may or may not be similar in effect to MDMA. Some of the other drugs include caffeine, ephedrine, amphetamine, dextromethorphan, ketamine, and LSD. Ecstasy sometimes contains highly toxic drugs, such as paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA), which can be lethal even in low doses. The immediate impact of ecstasy begins within about 45 minutes of taking a dose.

MDMA exerts its primary effects in the brain on neurons that use the chemicals serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine to communicate with other neurons. The use of depressant drugs such as alcohol, benzodiazepines or cannabis to help with these ‘come down’ effects, may result in dependence on both types of drugs. In the United Kingdom, MDMA was made illegal in 1977 by a modification order to the existing Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Although MDMA was not named explicitly in this legislation, the order extended the definition of Class A drugs to include various ring-substituted phenethylamines.271272 The drug is therefore illegal to sell, buy, or possess without a licence in the UK. Penalties include a maximum of seven years and/or unlimited fine Ecstasy Pills for Sale for possession; life and/or unlimited fine for production or trafficking.
This is often caused by the increase in brain chemicals such as serotonin (happy) and dopamine (reward). Common slang terms for MDMA (ecstasy) include the ‘love drug’, ‘E’, ‘eckies’, ‘pingers’ and ‘caps’. MDMA is usually swallowed as a tablet but can come in powder form. Pills are usually different colours and have pictures or logos stamped on them. There have also been reports of crystal MDMA in Australia and Victoria in recent years.
Tests of confiscated molly show that it’s often mixed with other harmful substances, including methamphetamine or bath salts. Chronic users of ecstasy perform more poorly than nonusers on certain types of cognitive or memory tasks. Some of these effects may be due to the use of other drugs in combination with ecstasy, among other factors. Research indicates heavy ecstasy use may cause persistent memory problems in humans, although studies are conflicting. Research in animals indicates that this drug, also referred to as MDMA or Molly, is neurotoxic and may affect the brain. Clinical studies suggest that ecstasy may increase the risk of long-term or permanent problems with memory and learning.
As a result, the pharmacological effects of MDMA (and MDEA) are a blend of those of the amphetamines and mescaline, as will be described in later sections of this review. Researchers at the University of Chicago published a study in Scientific Reports on September 22, 2023, that looked more closely at the pharmacological effects of MDMA and how it influences social interactions. In a series of carefully controlled experiments in a laboratory setting, they found that volunteers who took MDMA reported feeling significantly more connected to a conversation partner, compared to partners they conversed with after taking a placebo. Surprisingly, volunteers who took methamphetamine, a stimulant not known for empathogenic effects that acts on a slightly different receptor in the brain, also reported similar feelings of connectedness as MDMA. Taking an adulterated drug can lead to unexpected and unwelcome side effects and may increase its potential health risks. Over the past decade, illegally made opioids like fentanyl have been increasingly found in the drug supply, and have contributed to a dramatic rise in drug overdose deaths in the United States.
While mysticism deals with understanding the universe through direct experience, such as revelation, metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that deals with understanding the fundamental nature of reality through logic/argument. The paper ‘On the need for metaphysics in psychedelic therapy and research’ has been published in Frontiers in Psychology. Doses of one of the recommended antipsychotics, quetiapine, were also high the authors note, with only a few posts differentiating between fast and slower release formulations. Trip-killers were mostly discussed in reference to countering the effects of LSD (235 recommendations), magic mushrooms (143), and MDMA (21). The continent also made a recent historic advancement in the field of psychedelic research. In January 2024, the European Union announced €6.5 million in funding for research into psychedelic therapy as part of its Horizon Europe programme.
The chemical is called 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, or MDMA. Depending on the type of drug test used, ecstasy can be detected for three to five days after taking it. Typically, its effects last between four and six hours, but you may feel them for weeks. Research shows drugs such as cocaine are more likely to cause addiction than ecstasy.
