MDMA is more likely to lead to a serious emergency, like an overdose, if it’s been cut with another drug. If someone is overdosing, it’s important to get them medical attention right away. Stiffness and pain in the lower-back and limb muscles are very common complaints during the first 2–3 days after the use of MDMA. Headache, nausea, loss of appetite, blurred vision, dry mouth and insomnia are other commonly reported physical symptoms during the drug experience and immediately afterwards. Heart rate and blood pressure, which are usually elevated during the drug experience, tend to fluctuate more widely than normal during the following days. MDMA‐assisted psychotherapy employs single doses, administered under continuous medical supervision on two to three occasions a month apart. Drug administration is preceded by preparatory sessions and followed by psychotherapy sessions supporting integration of therapeutic changes into daily life (Figure1).

The new study paired healthy, adult volunteers with a partner they had never met. During some sessions, they were given a 100 mg dose of MDMA in a capsule; other times they were given a placebo. The experiment took place under double blind conditions (i.e. they didn’t know what drug they received), to minimize the influence of expectancies. The study found that MDMA therapy reduced anxiety more than those in the placebo group.
